1.Start with a Index funds gives wider scope to your portfolio either Nifity 50 or 100

2. Suitable Flexi cap fund for diversification

3. If Conservative buyer then opt for value oriented funds or multi cap category 25:25:50 types. (along with 1 & 2 above)

4. If risk lover then small or mid cap fund,decide risk appetite, little exposure of US markets index fund in portfolio (along with 1 & 2 above)

I myself started with safe and reliable Index fund initially. Followed up by flexi cap fund. Glad to my my decisions were rational. Want to start another fund for 17-18 years for my son.

For a beginner to start with Following Blueprint might help

1) start with Index fund {NIFTY 50 OR NIFTY 100 (high growth potential)}

2) Flexi cap fund

3) Then based on risk tolerance Mid cap or a small cap

Post above u can explore Foreign MF

Summary -

1. Start with Index fund - Nifty 50 or Next 50

2. Choose one flexi fund as well

3. One and two points is good for start SIP but you can go with small cap and mid cap with some risk taking ability

4. Start exposure of US index fund matket side by side and make 10% portfolio of sip as well once get comfortable in it.

Start with equity mutual fund in index fund then into flexi cap then decide your risk appetite and invest accordingly

How many MF you should have ?

-one index fund, Nifty50 or Nifty100

-Flexi cap

-Value oriented , multi cap (conservative buyer)

-midcap, smallcap (if not conservative buyer)

-at last little bit investment in US market
